First Episode of Psychosis

Early Intervention is everybody's business

The Access and Waiting Time Standard for Early Intervention services requires that at least 50% of people experiencing a first episode of psychosis will be seen by an early intervention team, allocated a care co-ordinator and have started treatment with a NICE approved package of care, within 2 weeks of referral. The standard is aimed at people aged 14-65

  • First episode of psychosis is treatable; recovery is expected
  • EI services need to work alongside primary care services
  • GP's off continuity, context and family practice
  • GP's have a key role in the care pathway of emerging psychosis
  • GP's listen and act on the concerns of the family
  • Physical health care of those with psychosis or on antipsychotic treatment, must be robust
